Clothing the Needy
The Buddha Maitreya Omaha Program provides living supplies and necessities to any individual who is in need of assistance including the homeless, needy, hungry, poorly-sheltered, low income, those with addiction and mental health problems, and families and others in the Omaha city center and surrounding areas on a daily basis. We provide life-saving necessities during Omaha’s extreme winter and summer weather, which is especially needed because heat stroke and hypothermia are very real here.
The majority of the people served are homeless and live on the streets, in parks, in homeless shelters, in their vehicles, in tents, or in sleeping bags. Many are trying to get subsidized housing, are in-between shelters or more stable living situations, or are simply wandering the streets. These individuals are all ages.
Each day, we drive to areas where homeless and needy are not regularly accessed by other services such as remote parks and parking lots, underpasses, long stretches of sidewalk beyond downtown, and homeless shelters.
An important aspect of our program is providing the needy with personal attention and care. We do this by asking the person exactly what they need in terms of clothing, shoes, personal items, etc.; ordering new items specifically in their size to fit them; and delivering them within days so their immediate needs are met.
Some of the necessities that we regularly provide are:
- Sleeping bags
- Tents
- Warm coats
- Thermals
- Boots
- Blankets
- Hats and gloves
- Personal hygiene supplies/toiletries
- Clothing
- Shoes and socks
- Under garments
- Inflatable mattresses
- Portable heaters
- Bed sheets
- Other requested items
